Opening (excerpt)

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied.

Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.

There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.

Story Summary(あらすじ)

"Madame Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds."

"Don't make any mistake, Dell," he said, "about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first."

"Dell," he said, "let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."

The Narrator's Final Words

The magi, as you know, were wise men — wonderfully wise men — who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication.

And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house.

But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

解説:O. Henry の twist ending

  • "the silent imputation of parsimony" ── 「けちだという無言の非難」。O.

  1. The opening sentence is famously simple: 'One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all.' Why does O. Henry begin with such a stark, almost child-like sentence? What emotional tone does it establish?
  2. O. Henry compares Della's hair to 'the Queen of Sheba's jewels' and Jim's watch to 'King Solomon's treasures'. Why these specific biblical references? Trace the title 'Gift of the Magi' back to its biblical source (Matthew 2:1–12).
  3. The story's twist depends on a kind of cosmic irony — both characters sacrifice their most prized possession to buy a gift that becomes useless. Is this tragic, or is it the deepest expression of love?
  4. The narrator concludes that Della and Jim are 'the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest.' Why does he call them wisest, not most loving? What does this say about wisdom?
  5. How does O. Henry's vision of Christmas (centered on sacrifice, not consumption) compare with today's commercialized Christmas? Can the story still speak to us in the era of Amazon and online shopping?
  6. Translate the final paragraph into Japanese. Notice how the rhythm and biblical echo of the English might or might not survive in translation.
