Opening (excerpt)
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied.
Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.
There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.
Story Summary（あらすじ）
1905 年 12 月 24 日、ニューヨークの安アパート。
若い妻 Della は、明日のクリスマスに夫 Jim に贈り物をしたいと願うが、手元には1 ドル 87 セントしかない。これは、何ヶ月もかけて、八百屋・肉屋・乾物屋と値切り倒して貯めた、なけなしの全財産だった。
彼女は鏡 (pier-glass) の前に立ち、自分の最大の宝 ── 膝下まで届く豊かな茶色の髪 ── を見つめる。そして、深く息を吸って、髪を売ることを決意する。
"Madame Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." の店で、彼女は20 ドルで髪を売り、夫の祖父から受け継いだ大切な金時計 (gold watch) にふさわしい、白金のwatch chain (時計の鎖) を 21 ドルで買う。
夕方 7 時、Jim が帰宅する。
彼は妻の姿 ── 髪を切り、ぼさぼさの巻き毛になった顔 ── を見て、立ち尽くす。表情は驚きとも怒りとも嘆きともつかない。
やがて彼は、ポケットから包みを取り出して、テーブルに置く。
"Don't make any mistake, Dell," he said, "about me. I don't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first."
Della が震える指で包みを開けると、そこにあったのは ── 鼈甲 (tortoise shell) の櫛のセット。ブロードウェイの店で何ヶ月も彼女がショーウィンドウに見つめていた、長く豊かな髪を飾るための、宝石のような櫛だった。
だが、その髪はもう、ない。
Della は涙ながらに笑い、Jim に自分の贈り物を渡す。── 鎖の付いた、美しい白金の watch chain。
Jim は、それを見て、ベッドに腰を下ろし、両手を頭の後ろに組んで、微笑む。
"Dell," he said, "let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."

The Narrator's Final Words
The magi, as you know, were wise men — wonderfully wise men — who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication.
And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house.
But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.
解説：O. Henry の twist ending
本作の結末は、O. Henry が世界文学に贈った最大のギフトと言ってよい。
- Della が髪を売って、Jim の watch のためのchain を買う。
- Jim が watch を売って、Della の髪のためのcombs を買う。
- 両者の贈り物が、互いに無用になる。
これは皮肉だが、悲しくはない。
むしろこの「使えない贈り物」こそが、愛の純粋さを最も雄弁に証明している。
「相手にとって最も価値があるものを贈るために、自分の最も大切なものを犠牲にした」── これ以上の愛の証明はない。
「the Magi」── 聖書のエコー
タイトルの「the Magi」は、新約聖書マタイ福音書 2 章 1–12 節に登場する東方の三博士を指す。
彼らは星に導かれて、生まれたばかりのイエスのもとに、黄金・乳香・没薬を捧げた。
O. Henry が Della と Jim を「the magi」と呼んだとき、彼はこの夫婦を、聖書の三博士になぞらえている。
── 「贈り物の本質を最も深く理解した者」として。
1905 年のニューヨーク
本作の舞台は、1905 年 (明治 38 年) のニューヨーク。
当時のアメリカは、ガス灯から電灯への過渡期。地下鉄が開通したばかり (1904 年)。
中産階級下層の若い夫婦が、週 8 ドルで furnished flat at $8 per week に住み、節約しながらクリスマスを祝う。
日本では、日露戦争のさなか。同年 9 月、ポーツマス条約。
東西の同時代を意識しつつ、20 世紀初頭の「庶民の聖夜」を体感したい。
英語学習のための注釈
- "bulldozing" ── ここでは「強引に値切る」の意 (現代の「ブルドーザー」とは別語感)。
- "flop down" ── どさっと倒れこむ。口語表現。
- "howl" ── 大声で泣く・吠える。動物的な響き。
